Luxury Meals That Were Once “Poor Man’s” Food

Big Steaks

Until a few decades ago, eating a large steak was considered an incredible misstep for members of high society. True upper-class members ate a dozen small steaks instead, putting as many as possible in their mouths at a time because – hold on tight – the width of the mouth was considered a sign of prosperity.

The prejudice against large steaks goes back far into the past: in ancient Egypt, in the Pharaonic era, accompanied by potatoes was a humiliating punishment for rude children.
