Luxury Meals That Were Once “Poor Man’s” Food

Just like lobster, caviar was considered a food for the desperate and was even served to prisoners in the 19th century and was so under-appreciated that it caused several bloody riots.

A man incarcerated in the New Jersey Penitentiary in 1843 wrote in his diary: “He cannot survive long in here. Caviar is so bad, even if served with blini and crème fraîche. We’ll have another riot tomorrow.” Unbelievable, but true.
