Some people may have an allergic reaction to all or only some shellfish. Symptoms vary and some range from mild to severe. In some cases, fish poisoning can be confused with an allergy.

It is more common in hot weather when there is seaweed in the sea because cooking shellfish does not destroy the poison they have absorbed from the seaweed. It is an allergy that is usually maintained throughout life.
